Personality: Sanzo makes up for his height and deceptive appearance with more than a little attitude. He's violent, possessing a patience with a short fuse and an accompanying temper. He has little patience for stupidity or weakness. He views those he travels with as inferiors that he has to tolerate, at best, and aggravating annoyances slowing down his journey, at worst. Life's a bitch and those around him, he feels, aren't much better. To call his personality "grating" would be a major understatement.
Sanzo is fiercely independent, and doesn't care what others think of him. As a priest, he follows very little of his religion's ideals: he drinks, swears, smokes, and kills, all with usually very little prejudice.
Abilities/Weaponry: Smith and Wesson (gun), sutra, paper fan (for smacking idiots back into their place).
Sanzo specializes in guns, and is an expert marksman. He can use his spiritual powers to rein in the Maten sutra on his shoulders, and turn it on enemies: demons primarily. He also has the ability to use certain tantras (such as a paralyzing tantra). These require intense concentration and usually the chanting of a mantra: in order to have time to pull these off, Sanzo has to have some distance between himself and the target. Getting him in close combat makes it nearly impossible to use most tantras. He's had some training in martial arts.
Weaknesses: His independence and the inherent pride attached to it tends to be his biggest weakness. He hates relying on others to fight for him, viewing it as a weakness, and prefers to fight his own battles...even if that means placing himself in harm's way, rather than being practical about the matter.
He's also only human, and therefore has much less durability and speed than demons, so he's much easier to injure.
Landels limitations: He can't perform any tantras while trying to restore a limiter. It's one or the other, and two tantras in the same night/day is tiring. A third will exhaust him completely. (this is outside of Special Counseling)
Brief History:
(As Kouryuu)
Sanzo originally went by the name "Kouryuu". He was found in a river by his mentor, Koumyou Sanzo, who took him into the temple and raised him. Kouryuu showed a natural aptitude for spiritual powers, but little care towards the teachings: he was loyal to Koumyou primarily, not towards those ideals.
When he was thirteen, demons arrived on the temple's doorsteps, searching for Koumyou's sutra: the priest ended up sacrificing himself to protect Kouryuu from them. Following his master's murder, the boy was promoted to Sanzo: he leaves almost immediatly to hunt down those who were responsible for Koumyou's death and to get the stolen Sutra back.

At this time, the demons and humans were living together somewhat peacefully, until it suddenly changed. A Minus Wave was unleashed that turned the demons feral: they went insane, attacking anything and anyone in their way. The symbiotic relationship between the two crumbled.
The Three Aspects ordered Sanzo to go west, and find out the cause of the wave, as well as to retrieve the lost Sutra.
